Cruise Food

Cruise ships are renowned for their high-quality food and dining onboard. On this page, I share answers to some of the questions you may have about cruise food and useful blog posts about the food available on a cruise. I’ve also included my recommendations for the best food to try in popular cruise destinations.

What is the best cruise line for food?

This will all depends on your taste and preferences. Luxury cruise lines are well-known for serving excellent quality food in a variety of dining venues. Oceania Cruises has been recognised for their culinary expertise in the British Cruise Awards 2018 and Wave Awards 2019. Royal Caribbean has a very good selection of specialty dining options. Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises are two premium cruise lines that have outstanding reputations for food onboard their cruise ships. My personal favourite cruise line for food is Princess Cruises. I absolutely loved the food on my AmaWaterways river cruise.

What do you eat on a cruise?

Cruise ships offer a huge array of food choices and one of the reasons why I love cruising. Cruise ship buffets offer a wide selection of fresh and destination-specific food to enjoy for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Every cruise ship has a Main Dining Room for passengers to enjoy. The Main Dining Room typically offers a three-course meal with vegetarian options and can cater for special dietary needs. It’s best to speak to the maitre’d about specific requests. Healthy options are always available on cruise ships.

I generally eat in the buffet for breakfast and lunch and the Main Dining Room or specialty restaurants for dinner.

Specialty dining on cruise ships offer passengers the chance to try different styles and cuisines. Specialty dining is typically an additional cost with the exeption of luxury and river cruise lines. Some cruise lines I’ve experienced offer specialty dining packages that enable cruisers to try a variety of restaurants during the cruise for a set price. You can expect to find specialty restaurants on cruise ships that offer fine dining, Italian, steak, sushi, Mexican, Asian, French and American cuisine. One of my favourite specialty dining restaurants is Izumi on Royal Caribbean.

Is food free on a cruise?

I think that a cruise is excellent value for money because food is typically included in your cruise fare with specialty dining available at an additional charge. You will be able to eat from the buffet, Main Dining Room and additional fast food or snack venues free of charge on a cruise. I find that there is always plenty of food on offer at all times of the day on a cruise so specialty dining is a good option to try different cuisines but is not an essential part of your cruise.
