Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Spectrum of the Seas, aims to offer new features and flavours to cater for the Asian cruise market. Sichuan Red is a brand new specialty dining restaurant to debut on Spectrum of the Seas and offer dishes from the Sichuan region of China. Think hot, sour and spicy flavours- and perhaps dishes that you are unfamiliar with!
Sichuan Red Location
The specialty restaurant is situated in the Royal Promenade area of the ship nearby many of the other specialty restaurants and Star Moment venue. The design of the ship means that this is the central area in close proximity to venues that are likely to appeal to the Chinese cruisers, such as the casino, shops and specialty tea cafe.
Sichuan Red Menu
The menu provides diners with two options: a set menu or al a carte menu. For passengers with a dining package, $35 per person is available to use at this restaurant. Unfortunately, this does mean that you are likely to have to pay more as the $35 credit will not cover an evening. Perhaps it is better suited to a lighter lunch offering?
Final Thoughts
Sichuan Red’s menu is definitely designed to cater for the Asian market and therefore it wasn’t really pitched for Western tastes. If you like bullfrogs and sea cucumbers, this could be the restaurant for you! I’m all for trying new cuisines but we found more appealing options onboard that we chose to enjoy instead. We had the dining package and found that as Sichuan Red was predominantly al a carte it didn’t work to our advantage with the prices of dishes. The set dining menu started st $99 per couple. I believe it could work quite well when it reaches Asia but the mix of nationalities on our repositioning cruise meant that this restaurant was fairly quiet.
