What are the plug sockets on Carnival Cruises?

One question that lots of cruisers have is ‘what plug sockets are on a cruise ship?’ It’s handy to know in advance if you need to take a plug adapter or charging station. It’s important to note that not all ships are the same and the plug sockets on Carnival Cruises differ slightly from ship-by-ship.

In this post, I have compiled a comprehensive list of the plug sockets on each Carnival cruise ship and which adapters and charging stations you are allowed to take on your cruise.

What plug sockets are on Carnival Cruise Line?

In most Carnival Cruise Line cabins there is one electric outlet located at the desk. The outlet is equipped with a 3-prong 110 volt (North America Grounded) and a 220 volt (Europe German-Style). There are more outlets on the Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee and Mardi Gras, also located at the desk.

The newer cruise ships also have USB points.

On selected Carnival cruise ships there are also standard Australian 3-point plug sockets.

I have done some research to confirm the plug sockets on Carnival Cruises ships so you can plan exactly what you may need to bring. It’s worth being aware that a razor power point is found in each cabin bathroom across all ships.

Carnival Breeze plug sockets

Carnival Breeze has 1 x 3-prong 110 volt (North America Grounded) and 1 x 220 volt (Europe German-Style) These are found by the desk.

We think that the reason for so many different types of plugs is because the ship was originally built for Costa Cruises.

Power Strips for Cruise Ships

If you want to take a power strip on your cruise, you need to make sure you choose one that is suitable for a cruise ship. Cruise ship sockets are different to those on land and therefore you should pick a non-surge protector plug adapter.

A regular power strip runs the risk of overloading the circuit, causing electrical damage and fire. This is why it’s important to check your power strip doesn’t have surge protection built in. If it does, it may be confiscated by Carnival Cruise Line on arrival.

Carnival Cruise Line prohibits weapons, illegal drugs and certain items that could interfere with the safe operation of its ships or compromise the safety and secure environment of its guests and crew.  Carnival conducts security scanning of all luggage and reserves the right to confiscate any item, which in Carnival’s sole discretion, is deemed dangerous or can pose a risk to the vessel or its guests. Items will be removed and disposed of and no compensation will be provided.

Carnival Cruise Line

You can take a look at the full list of prohibited items on Carnival Cruises. We believe it’s worth familiarising yourself with what you can and cannot bring on your cruise to avoid disappointment.

Electrical items you can bring on a Carnival cruise

  • Personal grooming devices such as hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons, shavers, and other electrical devices, such as fans (no larger than 12″ in diameter), power strips, multi plug box outlets/adaptors, and extension cords (without surge protectors) are allowed when used with proper caution.  However, if such devices are determined to pose a hazard, they will be removed and returned on debarkation morning
  • Bluetooth, portable and wireless speakers are only permitted within your stateroom and must be used respectfully and at reasonable sound levels and times of day. Carnival reserves the right to amend this policy for the comfort and enjoyment of our guests.  Large speakers/radios are always prohibited on board and will be confiscated
  • A CPAP machine will need to be packed in carry-on luggage. Carnival carries distilled water, which can be purchased either pre-cruise or on board by contacting Room Service.  Guests bringing their own distilled water, must hand carry along with their CPAP machine
  • Small, personal-sized coolers no larger than 12” x 12” x 12” for the purpose of housing, small quantities of non-alcoholic beverages and/or medications are permitted as carry-on luggage

Before packing, it’s worth being aware that Digital Cameras/Camcorders, DVDs/VCRs, USB sticks, iPods, Nintendo/X-Box Play Units cannot be used with the TV in the guest stateroom or suite as the connection ports are disabled.

Best Power Strip for U.S. Cruisers

If you are a U.S. citizen and require more plug sockets than your cabin has, we would recommend purchasing a Cruise On Power Strip from Amazon.

This power strip meets cruise ship requirements, so you know it’s safe to use and won’t be confiscated.

It has three U.S. plug sockets and two USB charging points. We think this is a great option if you require more charging points than the cabin provides.

Best Multi-plug Adapter for U.K. Cruisers

U.K. based cruise passengers need to have plug adapters for the U.S. and European plug sockets on Carnival Cruises.

These are trickier to find but we did come across a non-surge protected option at Screwfix. This has a British plug so would need to be used with a travel adapter. This would allow you to use a cruise approved power strip in any type of socket (provided you had the right travel adapter).

Final Thoughts about plug sockets on Carnival Cruises

It’s important that you check which travel adapters you need before your cruise. Hopefully, this post has helped you to decide what you require. Carnival Cruise Line will always have U.S. and European plug sockets and so if you live outside of the U.S. it’s important that you pack some travel adapters.

The worst case scenario is that you’ll have to purchase a travel adapter from the onboard shop.

If you have lots of devices that need charging, a power strip is useful to pack. The most important thing is that the power strip does not have surge protection.
